Galataport is Istanbul's modern cruise terminal and waterfront quarter at Karaköy, about 50 km from Sabiha Gökçen on the far side of the Bosphorus. Most passengers on this route are either joining a ship or staying in the Karaköy-Tophane hotel belt. Allow 50-75 minutes when traffic is kind, and accept from the start that a weekday peak can push the ride towards two hours.

Embarkation day, minute by minute
If you are joining a cruise, the single number that matters is your ship's sailing time. Vessels close boarding some time before departure, so leave a window of at least three to four hours between your scheduled landing at SAW and the sailing. Should your flight run late, the driver sees it in the tracking system and shifts the pickup automatically.
At the port, the car pulls up at the drop-off point best placed for luggage processing. Galataport handles its terminal formalities underground, so once the suitcases are checked in you are free to enjoy the promenade upstairs until boarding.
The road between the Asian side and the Karaköy waterfront
The default routing heads west on the D100/E-5, dives into the Eurasia Tunnel at Göztepe and emerges at Kazlıçeşme; from there, the Kennedy Avenue shore road wraps around Sarayburnu point and delivers you to Karaköy. When live traffic favours it, the driver switches to the 15 July Martyrs Bridge and comes down the Beşiktaş-Tophane shore instead.
Night arrivals can make it in 50-60 minutes; a typical daytime run lands at 60-90. Hitting the 17.00-20.00 weekday band means bracing for up to two hours.
More than a pier: the Galataport quarter itself
Even without a ship to catch, this address is a destination. The waterfront strip lines up shops and restaurants, İstanbul Modern stands right beside it, and behind rises the sixteenth-century Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque with its working hammam. The Tophane-Karaköy stretch has become one of the liveliest pieces of redeveloped shoreline in the city.
Boutique hotels on the Karaköy side and the lanes climbing towards Galata Tower are all within walking range — simply set your hotel as the transfer destination and the driver handles the rest.
Could you do it by tram or Marmaray instead?
You can, but not in one piece: the public chain is the M4 metro to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Marmaray under the strait to Sirkeci, then the T1 tram out to the Tophane stop. Three vehicles and two changes make an awkward pairing with cruise-sized luggage.
The airport shuttle coaches run to Taksim, which still leaves a downhill leg to the port by other means. With a ship's clock ticking, most passengers judge that uncertainty not worth the saving and ride door to door.
Details worth knowing before you land
The same service runs in reverse on disembarkation day: we meet you at the port's pickup point when you walk off the ship and drive the mirror route back to Sabiha Gökçen. Ships tend to berth early in the morning, when roads are at their emptiest, so the return usually sits at the fast end of the range.
Around Tophane, event days occasionally bring short-term traffic arrangements; our drivers follow these and adjust the exact stopping point on the day. Arriving with hours to spare is no hardship here either — once bags are handed over, the promenade, İstanbul Modern next door and the coffee lanes of back-street Karaköy fill the wait far better than a terminal seat would.
